Scout for Vintage is a custom denim store grounded in care, creativity and a love of slow fashion. Alongside thoughtful tailoring services, founder Jodie Hayes offers her White Label collection — a range of one-of-a-kind pieces fully reworked from vintage denim. Drop in for a quick hem, a denim overhaul or just to browse, and you’ll likely be greeted by Scout the dog, the store’s friendly front-of-house host and resident sweetheart.
Since relocating to Fitzroy earlier this year, Jodie’s found herself embraced by a strong sense of community — something that’s also reflected in the welcoming feel of the shop. In this Q&A, she shares the story behind the business, what inspires her, and how she’s helping more people make the switch to thoughtful, long-lasting fashion.
What sparked the idea for Scout for Vintage and how did the journey begin?
SFV was born during COVID in 2020. I had just walked away from my first business, which was a swimwear label, and after reflecting deeply on where my passions were, I knew I wanted to combine my skillset in fashion tailoring and my passion for vintage denim.
What drew you to vintage denim fashion in particular, and how has that passion evolved over time?
My attraction to vintage denim is heavily drawn from its long history in pop culture. It’s always been a representation of “working class” or “rebels,” which has now become one of the most common fashion staples worldwide. It has a “coolness” or edge to it that I’ve always been drawn to. Like leather, it really gets better the longer you own a pair of jeans and the more you wear them. Great vintage jeans can be read like a book — who that person was and how they wore them.
How would you describe your approach to sourcing pieces? What do you look for when curating your collection?
I always look for quality brands. My store is predominantly Levi’s, Lee and Wrangler. I look at what people not only want now but what they can own forever.
Can you share a favourite piece or style you are drawn to at the moment, or one that always gets a strong reaction?
Currently the Barrel Leg jean is my most popular. It’s included in my range of reworked jeans. I select denim to deconstruct and give them a new life.
Do you have any tips for people wanting to make the switch from fast fashion to a slower, more sustainable wardrobe?
Think about what you feel most comfortable in, look for quality brands that will last you years, and only buy something that brings you joy.
Are there any current trends or shifts you’re noticing in the world of vintage or denim fashion? Could the skinny jean be making a comeback?
Vintage is having a massive moment right now, with a lot more people taking the time to search for second-hand over new. I think people are starting to enjoy the search over instant gratification, which is great. Also making the effort to have something tailored and repaired before discarding, which is really important. As for skinny jeans, I’ve learnt to never say never!
What do you love most about being based in Fitzroy? Have any favourite local spots or neighbours made you feel especially at home?
I never expected such a ‘neighbourhood’ vibe moving to the city from the coast, but the area here on Johnston Street is so welcoming and full of great little spots that make you feel like a regular very quickly.
Where do you like to take visitors when they’re in the area? Are there any cafes, shops, streets or local gems you’re always excited to share?
Coffee would be either Dustys or Alimentari. Late-night drinks would be Sugar Glider — always a fun, welcoming vibe.
What is a typical day like at Scout for Vintage and what can someone expect if they drop by the store for a custom alteration or new piece for their denim wardrobe?
There isn’t really a standard day in the store, which is great. But there are always services to keep me busy, and keeping the reworked range stocked up is a massive part of my day. I think when people come in to get their jeans tailored, the main thing they learn is how easy it is. Fittings usually take less than five minutes to measure up and are much less daunting than they think!
Are there any exciting plans coming up at Scout for Vintage, such as new arrivals, launches, workshops or collaborations?
I’ve worked with some fun businesses lately, but my latest reworked collaboration with Ksubi for one of their promos will be out soon.
